Finish Strong: The Power of Focused Intentionality
As we enter the fourth quarter, many leaders find themselves balancing competing priorities, unfinished initiatives, year-end goals, and the increasing demands of a fast-moving environment.
One question I’ve been reflecting on recently, both personally and with coaching clients, is:
What are the 3-4 inputs that matter most between now and year-end?
High performers rarely accomplish everything.
Instead, they identify what matters most and intentionally direct their attention, energy, and effort toward those priorities.
In my experience, finishing the year strong is rarely about working harder, doing more, or adding additional commitments.
It is often about creating greater clarity. Greater clarity around:
- The outcomes that matter most
- The habits and behaviors that support those outcomes
- The distractions that need to be minimized
- Where time, energy, and attention should be invested
Increasingly, I believe one of the greatest challenges facing leaders today is not a lack of information. It is a lack of focus. We live in a world filled with notifications, meetings, opportunities, obligations, competing priorities, and constant inputs vying for our attention.
This is where concepts such as the 80/20 Rule and signal-to-noise ratio can be particularly valuable.
The 80/20 Rule suggests that a small number of activities often drive a disproportionate amount of results.
Signal-to-noise ratio encourages us to distinguish between what is truly meaningful and impactful (signal) versus what simply creates activity, distraction, or busyness (noise).
As the year begins to wind down, it may be worthwhile to ask:
- What are the 3-4 outcomes that matter most between now and December 31st?
- What are the 3-4 inputs most likely to create those outcomes?
- What is signal?
- What is noise?
The challenge is not always knowing what to do.
The challenge is deciding what deserves our attention.
One reminder I continue to come back to:
Success is often not determined by doing more.
It is determined by focusing more intentionally on the few things that matter most.
Reflection Questions
What are the few weekly inputs that would make those outcomes increasingly likely?
What is one commitment, distraction, or activity I can reduce, delegate, or eliminate to create greater focus?
