Agency vs. Reactivity

Agency vs. Reactivity.

Most of us want to be intentional, proactive, and aligned with our values.

Yet when demands increase, schedules fill, and challenges arise, it is easy to become reactive, responding to circumstances, emails, meetings, and other people’s priorities without much pause.

Over time, reactivity can create the feeling that work and life are happening to us rather than being shaped by us.

Agency is different.

Agency is recognizing that while we cannot control every circumstance, we can choose how we respond. In my own personal and leadership journey, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that it is difficult to respond intentionally when we are carrying unprocessed emotions.

They often show up as distraction, overthinking, frustration, or reactivity. As I’ve become more intentional about processing emotions rather than resisting them, I’ve noticed greater alignment between my thoughts, emotions, values, and actions.

When this alignment is present, there tends to be greater clarity, confidence, resilience, empowerment, and effectiveness. When it is absent, it can feel like being pulled in multiple directions, reacting rather than responding.

I think of this as cognitive and emotional congruence.

A simple mantra that has been helpful for me:

Accept everything. Be grateful. Keep building more of what matters.

I find this mindset creates space between what happens and how I choose to respond.

In a world increasingly shaped by complexity, uncertainty, and AI-driven change, these human capabilities remain essential.
